Great!

This book was fantastic. You really felt like you could understand where this labrador was coming from. You could see what he was looking at and you really felt like you were right there in the book. This is a well written book. It will make you laugh and cry. And maybe even look at your furry friend with a whole new outlook!
Disappointed

I just finished this book last night and I have to say I was very disappointed. Like the other reviewers I was very unhappy with the ending. That said, it was an interesting concept.
Loved the book, not the ending :(

Labrador Pact starts with the ending but you SO WANT the book to end differently. All along you are hoping something will change.
Prince is the family dog doing his best to uphold the "Labrador Pact". You really want Prince to succeed in his mission.......which as you learn is not an easy task. I can usually figure out some "stuff" in books but this one really throws some zingers in there.
Enjoyable book overall (but I don't know ANYONE who liked the ending). I almost wish authors would give readers multiple choices of how the book ends..... It's my first book by Matt Haig & it won't be my last. |
I cared about Prince.

Didn't much care for his wobbly family.
I kept saying to myself "Mr. Haig -- DON'T DO IT!"
But he did. Dammit.

Interesting, but a big downer

Reviewer: Laura,
I found this book interesting, but I'm not sure I would recommend it to anyone. The whole thing was a big downer. I liked Haig's quick and to the point writing style, but the book left me always feeling tense. Another reviewer said they felt something like impending doom while reading, because you knew something terrible was going to happen and our protagonist (the dog) would be helpless to stop it. I agree with that reviewer. On quote on the back of the book called this novel 'funny' and `comic'. I don't think I laughed once. It is not an uplifting tale about the power of animals, which I thought it may have been. Once you read the first chapter you know that's not the case, but I didn't think it would be so depressing. In the end, humans are too far gone to be helped by anything or anyone. Our drive for self-destruction is to strong. That's Haig's message. If you're looking for a story about dogs, look elsewhere. The dog dies purposelessly. If you don't mind a message about how beyond help the human species is, enjoy!
